Goodbye, Leah.
A playful, late-night search for ghosts inside a University of Toronto landmark ended in tragedy yesterday when a 29-year-old woman plunged to her death.
Leah Kubik, who was just two weeks shy of her 30th birthday, was found without vital signs inside a courtyard at 1 Spadina Cres. just before 2 a.m.
— Ghost hunt turns deadly, Toronto Sun, 9/11/09I just found out about this today. Damn.
I met Leah for the first time at a LUG@NCSU Installfest in 2003. Of course, being a college-bound geek, I took notice of the chick who was furiously trying to fix a bootloader issue on a Thinkpad with no backlight. Whoa.
My mom was out of town, and I was staying with my grandparents. I called them to let them know that “we compiled a kernel with the wrong flags, so we’re going to be recompiling for a while”, and hung out with Elliot and her until far too late in the evening, drinking fancy beer and marveling at her totally awesome Pismo that had 2 FireWire ports (my TiBook only had one). We had a great time.
I saw Leah a few more times around the LUG, and then not a whole lot, except online. The last time I remember seeing her was at Legends on Halloween, the year I was Frylock.
